Powerful. Especially Jung's insight and the parallel with 1936 Germany. The way you tie history to current events to reveal deeper meaning is so helpful. And you're so right. This regime isn't even *trying* to pretend anymore.
"The possessed never know they’re possessed. That is the nature of the condition." Very insightful. And there is a particular flavour to this condition in North America.
For those of us who are deemed worthy, who's European ancestors came to "settle the land", our amnesia runs very deep. So many years of colonization that we don't even know we are colonized, we don't see how it runs through our veins, dictates how our orphaned selves see our place among things - orphaned from our land, customs, connection, inner life. We've hid behind the guise of liberal democracy for centuries, not seeing those who we oppress to maintain this illusion. What happened to Renee is horrific, the spin and commentary is horrific. And it's been happening for centuries - both our countries (I'm Canadian) are built upon "you don't matter, you're not worth anything". It's just that now it's happening to a white woman in her SUV. I mean at the last democratic convention, with all the hype and joy over the prospect of the first black, female president, those who voiced any dissent or care for Palestinians were silenced and that presidential nominee herself affirmed the rights of those committing genocide to go ahead (and her support for them). What happened to Renee began hundreds of years ago, and now, the momentum, the entrenchment is so strong and the possessed are so numb, so dead inside, we have virtually no inner resources to stand up. As settlers such as myself begin to see the condition that has us, we are faced with a mountain of horror that we are entirely unprepared to work with.
I've been digging into this question for a while now and I'm not sure where I'm at today has any value but here it is (speaking as a white settler) .... develop the capacity to face what Jermaine referred to as "the condition". It runs through us all in some way, not just certain of those among us. It's the water we swim in. Banish shame and guilt far beyond your threshold, don't let them in. They'll take you off track. Learn to face the horror without it dulling your heart. And figure out whatever your gift is - singing, growing vegetables, repairing old things, knitting, caring for trees, writing as Jermaine does - and give it in service to others, let it draw you into connection, care and regard with the human and more-than-human world around you. These are not small things - they are radical acts of rebellion and love for a dying world and they have immense value.

What can we do besides feel the rage and the powerlessness of it all?
What can we do to break free of this?

thank you.
The simple lie is always easier to believe than the complex truth. Machiavelli wrote about it 500 years ago and it’s still true today
