Without understanding our history, the people will not understand our laws, they are intertwined. The 1619 Project when it was published and printed in the NY Times https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2019/08/14/magazine/1619-america-slavery.html showed the relationship between our history and the laws passed since the introduction of slavery on our shores. It was a powerful counterpoint to a national story that "whitewashed" our history, so it was attacked by the white supremacists and they began a war against its appearance in school curriculum. The Anti-DEI wars began, Fox News and MAGA supporters all worked on getting rid of the "faces" that did not belong. Trump was elected on a foundation of lies, "fear of the other," and a well organized Project 2025 to disassemble our laws and our governmental structure. They began with the massive firing of government workers using DOGE. Huge numbers of these workers were DC area Black women who had good paying jobs. Efficiency and meritocracy were the goals, not racism, they would tell us. The purge continued in the Armed Forces, the schools, the Universities, the Press, government contracts, legal and financial institutions. It just...hurts my soul this unmitigated dishonoring of life—in all its forms. I suppose once you've cut yourself off from, objectify "nature" as not you, not "real," not sacred, you null and void any consciousness that might stir your animus to put down its weapons, held only because it is so very afraid—of everything that is not what it thinks itself to be.
